Distance: About 12 miles
Drive: Roughly 20 minutes outside rush hour, longer between 4pm and 6pm southbound
Route: I-5 south to the 6th Avenue or Front Street exits, then into the Gaslamp Quarter. From the Village, La Jolla Parkway to I-5 is the quickest way on.
Transit: No direct trolley from La Jolla. The Blue Line does not run this far north, so almost everyone drives.
Parking: There is metered street parking on 6th Ave and on the cross streets either side of Broadway, and several pay lots within a block. If you are carrying something heavy, a flatware chest or a box of coins, pull up directly outside and we will come out and help you carry it in.

Coming down from La Jolla

The drive is straightforward and the traffic is the only variable: southbound I-5 backs up from about four in the afternoon, so mid-morning is the easy window and it is also when the counter is quietest. If you are bringing something substantial, call ahead and we will have the buyer with the most expertise in your type of item free when you arrive rather than whoever happens to be at the counter.

Is there a jewelry buyer in La Jolla itself?

There are jewelers in the Village, and some of them buy. What should I bring?

The item and a valid government-issued photo ID, which California law requires from anyone selling to a licensed buyer. Nothing needs cleaning, repairing or polishing first.

Should I get it appraised in the Village first?

You can, and it is worth understanding the difference. A retail or insurance appraisal gives a replacement value, which is what it would cost to buy new. That is the number you insure against and it is almost always far above what any buyer will pay. Ours is a buying appraisal: what we will actually hand you today. Bring the insurance paperwork by all means, but do not be surprised the two numbers differ.

I inherited a whole estate. Can you handle that?

Yes, and it is worth calling ahead rather than arriving with boxes. We will set aside a private room and have the right people free, because an estate usually spans jewelry, watches, silver and coins and no single buyer covers all four. If travelling with it is impractical we will talk through the alternatives.

Do you buy from the UCSD and Torrey Pines side too?

Yes. Everything north of the Village runs down the same stretch of I-5 and the drive is much the same. There is nothing different about the process by neighbourhood; the only variable is the traffic.
