Coming in from North Park or Hillcrest

This is the easiest trip of anywhere in the city: 6th Avenue runs from Hillcrest straight down past Balboa Park and into the Gaslamp, and you finish on the street we are on. Because it is a short hop, this is the group most likely to bring one thing in on a lunch break, which is fine. An appraisal on a single piece takes minutes.

Questions from North Park and Hillcrest

Can I come in on a lunch break?

Yes, and plenty of people from these neighborhoods do. A single piece takes minutes. If you are bringing a whole estate or a box of flatware, call ahead so we can have the right buyer free and a private room ready.

Do you buy estate jewelry from the older homes up here?

Regularly. The craftsman homes around North Park and Hillcrest turn up a lot of period jewelry, and antique and estate pieces are valued on the piece rather than by metal weight. Do not have anything cleaned or repaired first.

What if I just want it valued and not sold?

That is a normal outcome and there is no charge. The appraisal is free and verbal, and you are welcome to take the number and think about it, or take it elsewhere.

These are old houses. Is period jewelry worth more?

Sometimes considerably. Much of the housing stock around North Park, University Heights and Hillcrest dates from the 1910s to the 1930s, and pieces of that era — filigree platinum, old European cut diamonds, Art Deco mountings — are valued on the piece rather than by metal weight. Do not have anything cleaned or repaired first; original condition is part of the value.

I have a box of mixed odds and ends. Is that a waste of your time?

No, and it is one of the more common things through the door. Mixed lots take a little longer because everything is sorted, tested and weighed separately, so allow twenty minutes rather than five. There is no minimum.

Can I walk over from Balboa Park?

It is about a mile and a half from the park's western edge, so walkable if you are not carrying much, and a short ride otherwise. Several bus routes come down 6th and Park.
