| Grade | What it looks like | Do we buy it |
|---|---|---|
| New | Unworn, as it left the boutique, usually with everything it shipped with | Yes |
| Excellent | Worn lightly and cared for. No structural issues, corners and handles clean | Yes |
| Very good | Clear signs of use that read as normal wear. Nothing broken, nothing replaced | Yes |
| Good | Honest wear throughout: corner rub, handle patina, interior marks. Still sound | Yes |
| Below good | Structural damage, water or mould staining, a replaced strap, a poor previous repair, an odour that will not clear | Not usually. Bring it and we will tell you plainly rather than guess over the phone |
Which designer handbags do you buy?
Hermès, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and other luxury leather. Condition, completeness and the model matter more than age: a well-kept classic is often worth more than a newer bag in poor shape.
Do I need the dust bag, box and receipt?
No, but they help. Original packaging, authenticity cards, receipts and the dust bag all add to what we can pay, so bring whatever you still have.
Will you buy a bag with wear?
Ordinary wear, yes. Corner rub, handle darkening and interior marks are normal and get priced in rather than counted against you. What we generally cannot buy is a bag below good condition: structural damage, water staining or mould, a broken frame, a replaced strap, an odour that will not clear, or a poor previous repair.
We typically purchase in good, very good, excellent and new condition. Bring a borderline bag anyway. Condition is easy to misjudge from the inside of your own closet, and we would rather look at it than have you throw away something worth real money.
How do you authenticate a handbag?
In house, before we make an offer. Our team examines stitching, hardware, date codes and construction. We are not sending it away and calling you next week.
Can I sell a handbag without coming to the store?
Yes. The Sell From Home kit is free and includes secure packaging and a prepaid overnight label. Shipping is insured to the full value of the item with no cap. We make an offer within one business day of arrival, you are paid the same day if you accept, and if you decline we pay the return shipping.
What is the appraisal like?
Free, verbal, and done at the counter while you watch. We explain what we are looking at and why it changes the value. No fee, no obligation, whether you sell, borrow against it, or put it back in your pocket and leave.
Where can I sell a designer bag near me in San Diego?
907 6th Ave in the Gaslamp Quarter, downtown, Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm. A short drive from La Jolla, Del Mar, Coronado, Hillcrest, North Park and Chula Vista. Walk-ins are welcome; booking ahead means the buyer who knows your brand best is the one who sees you.
Is it better to sell outright or consign?
Selling outright pays you today and ends it. Consignment can net more but you wait for a buyer and carry the risk that the piece does not sell. We do both and will tell you honestly which suits the bag in front of us, because a fast-moving classic and a hard-to-place seasonal piece are not the same decision.
What hurts a handbag's value most?
In order: replaced or aftermarket hardware, a rebuilt or re-dyed interior, missing authenticity cards on brands that issue them, and heavy corner wear. Odour and water damage are harder to price than scratches. Ordinary patina on Vachetta leather is expected and does not count against you.
What exactly do you look at to authenticate a bag?
The maker's own markings first. A Louis Vuitton date code is two letters followed by four digits, and the letters have to correspond to a workshop that was actually producing that line. Chanel used an adhesive serial sticker whose digit count moves with the era. Hermès uses a blind stamp rather than a serial.
Both LV and Chanel have since moved to embedded chips instead of printed codes, so an absent code is not by itself a problem and a present one is not by itself a pass.
After the markings we weigh and inspect the hardware, count and align the stitching on the seams counterfeiters get wrong, read the lining and interior tags, and compare against examples we have handled.
How quickly can I be paid for a handbag?
Usually the same visit. If the bag comes with its papers and receipts, authentication and appraisal happen while you wait and you are paid before you leave.
Without the full paperwork it takes longer, from about an hour up to 24 hours, because the bag itself then has to carry the whole proof: the date code or heat stamp, the hardware, the stitching, the lining and the interior tags, checked against examples we have handled.
That is a real day rather than a holding pattern, and we would rather take it than hand you a number we cannot stand behind. We are at 907 6th Ave, Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm. If you are not in San Diego the free insured Sell From Home Kit does the same job by post.
