Everything is tested and weighed in front of you and priced against that day’s spot, and we check for collector premium before anything is valued as metal.
What we look at
Coins are the one part of the gold trade where weight is not the whole answer. Most modern bullion coins trade close to their metal content, but a date, a mintmark or a grade can put a coin well above melt, and once it has been sold as scrap that difference is gone for good. So we look before we weigh. If a coin is worth more than its gold, we will tell you, even when that makes it harder for us to buy.

- Whether a piece is bullion, numismatic, or a jeweler’s copy
- Assay card and serial for bars, which speed everything up
- Cleaning or polishing, which reduces a collectible coin’s value rather than improving it
- Weight to the tenth of a gram on a certified scale, in front of you

- 24K, .9999 fine. Priced slightly above the Eagle on purity.

- 22K South African, one ounce and fractional. Very widely held.

- .9999 fine. Soft and easily marked, so condition shows.
- British Sovereign and Britannia
- Sovereigns are small and often inherited in quantity.

- Double Eagles, Eagles and Half Eagles, where grade can matter a great deal.

Questions people ask first
Do you pay more than melt for collectible coins?
When the coin justifies it, yes. Pre-1933 US gold, key dates and graded coins can carry a premium well above their metal, and we check before pricing anything as scrap. If your coin is worth more to a collector than to us as metal, we would rather say so than buy it cheaply.
Should I clean my coins before bringing them in?
No, and this is the most costly mistake people make. Cleaning a collectible coin can remove a large part of its value permanently. Bring it exactly as it is, tarnish included.
Do you buy generic bars without an assay card?
Yes. A card and serial make it faster, but an unmarked or poured bar is simply tested first, because purity cannot be assumed from an unofficial stamp.
Is there a minimum quantity?
No. One sovereign in a drawer is worth bringing in, and so is a box of them. There is no minimum on an appraisal and none on a collateral loan either.
