Custom jewelry

The stone is worth keeping.
The setting is not.

We design, repurpose, restore and repair at 907 6th Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Most people who come to us for custom work are not starting from nothing: they have a ring in a drawer that nobody wears, and a stone in it worth putting back into circulation. We are a full-service jewelry store, so the same team that values estate pieces every day is the team that rebuilds them.

What we do

Four kinds of work.

  1. 1

    Design from scratch

You describe the piece, we draw it, and our bench makes it. Bring a photo, a sketch or just an idea. You approve the design before anything is cut.

  2. 2

    Repurposing an heirloom

The most common thing people ask us for. A ring nobody wears becomes a pendant, or a grandmother’s stone moves into a setting someone will actually put on. You keep the stone that matters and lose the setting that dates it.

  3. 3

    Restoration

Worn prongs, thinned shanks, damaged engraving and finishes that have gone flat. Antique and period pieces are restored to wear again rather than modernised.

  4. 4

    Repair

Sizing, retipping, soldering, stone tightening, clasp and chain work, watch bracelet links. The unglamorous half of a full-service jeweler, and the half people actually need most weeks.

Questions people ask first.

What does custom jewelry cost?

It depends entirely on the piece: the metal, the stones, whether you are supplying them, and how much bench time the design takes. We quote against the actual job rather than off a price list. Bring the idea in, or send photos, and we will give you a real number before any work starts.

How long does it take?

That depends on the piece too. A resize or a retip is quick. A piece designed and built from scratch takes longer, and a restoration depends on what we find when we look at it closely. We will tell you the timeline when we quote, not after.

Can you use my own stones or gold?

Yes, and it is often the better option. We buy and sell estate diamonds every day, so we are used to working with stones that already exist. If you have gold you no longer wear, it can go into the new piece instead of being sold.

Who actually does the work?

Our team, at our bench. The same people who value pieces at the counter are the people who know what a setting can take, which is exactly the knowledge a repair or a reset needs.

Do I need an appointment for custom work?

No, but it helps. Walk in 10:00am - 6:00pm, Monday to Friday, at 907 6th Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. If you call ahead we will have the right person free and a private room ready, because design conversations take longer than a counter appraisal.

Selling instead of remaking? We buy jewelry outright, or you can borrow against a piece and keep it.

Tell us about the piece

Send it over and we will price the work.
