What should I check before bringing silver?

  • Note markings such as sterling, 925 or 999. Markings help, but testing confirms the material.
  • Silver plate is not solid silver. A silver color alone does not establish precious-metal content.
  • Weighted candlesticks and knife handles can contain filling or other materials, so gross weight is not silver weight.
  • Do not polish collectible coins. Keep matching flatware and any maker or pattern information together.

How is a silver offer worked out?

Purity, actual silver weight and the market affect metal value. A collectible coin, signed jewel or complete flatware set may also have resale value. Ask how each part of the offer was calculated; a spot-price estimate is not a purchase offer.

For item-specific preparation, read our silver coin guide or sterling silverware guide. Broken sterling pieces can still contain valuable silver. Call to check your complete lot before making the trip.

What is junk silver, and do you buy it?

Junk silver is US dimes, quarters and half dollars dated 1964 or earlier, which are 90% silver. The name is misleading: they are not junk, they simply have no collector premium above their metal, so they trade on weight.

We buy them by the coin, the roll or the bag, and we check dates before weighing in case something in the pile is worth more than melt.

Do you buy sterling flatware and tea sets?

Yes, and this is one of the most common things people bring us. A full service that nobody has used in thirty years is worth real money by weight. Bring the whole set including odd pieces.

One caution: weighted pieces such as candlesticks and some handles are filled with cement or pitch, so only the silver shell counts, and we will show you the difference on the piece itself.

How do I know if it is sterling or plate?

Look for a mark: sterling, 925, or a lion passant on English pieces. Plate is usually marked EPNS, A1, or Silver on Copper. If there is no mark at all we test it, which takes a moment and costs nothing. Plated items have effectively no melt value, and we would rather tell you that than let you drive downtown hoping.

How is silver priced?

Weight multiplied by purity against the day's spot price, the same arithmetic as gold. Silver moves more sharply than gold in percentage terms, so the day you come in genuinely matters. Ask what spot is and check it on your phone while you stand there.

Where can I sell silver near me in San Diego?

907 6th Ave in the Gaslamp Quarter, downtown, Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm. A short drive from Hillcrest, North Park, La Jolla, Coronado, Point Loma and Chula Vista. Reserved customer parking is available in the ACE lot across the street, directly opposite our storefront. Paid parking options are also available.

Do you buy silver bullion and rounds?

Yes. Bars, rounds and government coins including American Silver Eagles, Maple Leafs and Britannias. Recognised mint bars are straightforward; unmarked poured bars are tested first because purity cannot be assumed.

How do I get paid?

Same day you accept. No per-transaction cash limit, though a very large amount needs a day's notice so we can arrange the funds. Check and wire are always available.

What do I need to bring?

The silver and a valid government-issued photo ID. California law requires ID from anyone selling to a licensed buyer.
