Sell Rolex: Real vs. Fake Rolex Watches

A Rolex cannot be authenticated by a serial-number lookup or a single visual rule. The reference, case, dial, bracelet, movement and available records need to be considered together. Use this guide to prepare questions, not to declare a watch genuine from a photograph.

Start with the exact reference, not a blanket rule

A model reference identifies a watch design or configuration; a serial number identifies an individual watch. Neither number, by itself, proves authenticity. Compare the watch with information for its specific reference and period, and ask an experienced watch professional about discrepancies.

Three old rules that no longer hold

• An elastomer bracelet is not an automatic sign of a counterfeit. Rolex's Oysterflex bracelet uses flexible metal blades covered with elastomer. A replacement strap is a separate question from whether the watch itself is genuine.
• A transparent case back is not an automatic sign of a counterfeit. Rolex documents sapphire case backs on the 1908, Land-Dweller and certain platinum Cosmograph Daytona versions. Check the exact reference; this does not mean every Rolex should have one.
• Steel, gold and platinum are not the entire material list. The Yacht-Master 42 reference 226627 is made in RLX titanium. Weight or a material guess alone cannot authenticate a watch.

Reference length does not establish a watch's age

Four-, five- and six-digit references can help organize research, but they are not a universal calendar. Rolex's modern 1908 reference 52508 is a five-digit example. Do not confuse a model reference with the watch's unique serial number or present an online dating estimate as a verified production date.

Check originality and condition separately

Ask which dial, bezel, bracelet and other parts are original to the watch, which were replaced during service, and which are aftermarket. A genuine watch can have replacement or modified parts. Those details affect how it should be described and valued; they need more than a matching number.

Bring any warranty card, purchase receipt and service records you have, but do not treat a box or paperwork as a substitute for examining the watch. Ask the seller what has been checked, what remains uncertain, and what return or warranty terms actually apply. Do not open the case or remove parts yourself just to look for a number.
