What does a gold refiner actually do?

Refining is a chemical process that separates gold from the other metals alloyed with it and returns it to near-pure form. It pays for metal content and nothing else: the craftsmanship, the maker and the design all disappear in the crucible.

That is the right outcome for broken chain, dental gold, single earrings and worn-out mountings, and the wrong outcome for a signed piece or a period setting that is worth more intact than melted.

Why does a refiner and a buyer give different numbers for the same piece?

Because they are pricing two different things. A refiner prices the gold: weight times purity times the day's spot price, less the cost of refining it. A buyer prices the object, and will pay above metal value when the piece can be resold as it is.

We run both numbers and pay the higher one, which is the entire reason to bring a piece to a buyer who also refines rather than to a refiner alone.

How is the weight actually taken?

On a certified scale, in grams, with you watching. Stones, clasps, spring bars and any non-gold parts come off the total because they are not gold. We test the karat rather than trusting the stamp, since plated and under-karated pieces both carry marks.

Then the arithmetic is weight times purity against that day's live spot, and we will show you each step instead of handing you one number.
