Start with what you know

Tell us about your gemstone jewelry.

No photo or certificate is needed to begin. Start with your contact details, then add what you know about the piece.

We offer free verbal appraisals for purchase and/or loans with no obligation or pressure to sell.

Step 1 of 2 · How to reach you

Understand your piece

Start with your gemstone

The whole jewel matters

A gemstone is only part of a jewelry assessment. We also consider the precious-metal setting, maker, workmanship, condition and current demand. A signed ring or carefully made pendant may deserve a different discussion from a loose stone or a scrap-metal calculation.

Our ruby, sapphire and emerald guides explain the details useful for each inquiry. Opal, topaz and jade need their own questions about construction, terminology and treatment. Diamonds have a separate evaluation guide. Choose the closest guide, or describe the item without guessing its identity.

Bring the piece and the information you already have

Keep stones in their settings. Bring existing laboratory reports, receipts or appraisals if available, and mention known repairs or damage. No certificate or photo is needed to begin the inquiry. A specialist can explain which additional information would actually be useful.

For a preliminary discussion, ordinary-light photos of the whole piece, marks and visible details can help. We do not turn a photograph into a guaranteed identity or binding purchase price. Share what is known and what is uncertain; there is no need to prepare a technical description yourself.

Know which number you are comparing

An insurance replacement appraisal, a retail asking price and a buyer’s purchase offer answer different questions. We explain the materials, characteristics, condition and resale market relevant to our own assessment, so you can compare the offer on a clear basis.

We offer free verbal appraisals for purchase and/or loans with no obligation or pressure to sell. A formal written appraisal or independent laboratory report is a different service. Ask about the particular item before arranging additional work or shipping it to us.

Expertise, equipment & market knowledge

A closer look. An offer you understand.

You work one-on-one with our specialists. Our team includes GIA credential holders and experienced jewelry professionals. We examine the complete piece, explain what we find and discuss the market factors behind our assessment. You can ask questions and take time to decide.

Long-standing buyer and wholesaler relationships help us understand resale demand beyond a scrap-only calculation. A stone, signed setting or well-made jewel can deserve separate consideration. We explain which characteristics support the offer rather than asking you to accept a number without context.

Microscopy: condition, construction and detail

Our gemological microscopes help us examine internal features, surface wear, settings and workmanship with suitable lighting. Those observations can reveal details that matter to a gemstone or the complete jewel. We interpret them alongside other appropriate checks rather than treating magnification alone as proof of identity or origin.

Refractometry and thermal screening: narrow the possibilities

Our GEM Instruments Duplex II refractometer measures how a suitable, accessible gemstone surface bends light. Our Presidium Gem Tester provides thermal-conductivity screening on suitable materials. These methods supply different clues; overlapping results and the way a stone is mounted can limit what they establish. Neither instrument alone provides an authenticity certificate or a price.

Raman spectroscopy: investigate the material

Raman spectroscopy compares a material’s light-scattering spectrum with reference information to help investigate its identity. We select appropriate methods for the question and explain their findings. Some treatment, natural-origin or geographic-origin questions need additional work by an independent gemological laboratory; no single instrument settles every question.

Before you visit

Can I start without knowing the gemstone’s identity?

Yes. Tell us what you know about the intact piece and share any available documents. Our specialists can review the inquiry and explain the appropriate next step. No photo or certificate is required to begin.

What gemstone items can I ask about?

Start with your fine gemstone jewelry and its precious-metal setting. You can also ask about a loose stone or another piece before visiting. Buying suitability depends on the individual item; listing a gemstone in this guide does not mean every example is purchased.

Do I need to buy a new laboratory report first?

No. Share the documents you already have first. A specialist can explain whether additional independent laboratory work would help, and discuss the next step before you arrange it.

Is a free verbal offer the same as an insurance appraisal?

No. Our free verbal appraisal relates to a potential purchase or eligible loan. It is not a formal written insurance appraisal, a gemstone grading report or a laboratory identification certificate.

Can I borrow against every gemstone listed here?

Loan eligibility is assessed separately for the particular item. Ask about the proposed amount, costs, repayment and redemption terms in the written agreement. These gemstone guides do not promise a loan on every stone or a nationwide gemstone-loan service.

Not local? Discuss selling jewelry from home before shipping. Considering borrowing? Ask about an eligible jewelry loan and its written terms.
